I agree the top and bottom shelves are the low rent districts…people just don’t browses them. Use those for special items that people seek out, not general. Pull out the reference books. Sort by type and file on a low rent shelf. if we have enough non-fiction to pull out and treat like the reference books. We probably won’t have enough and in that case, these get interfiled with the fiction. For the bulk of the books, simply alphabetize by author and shelf. It doesn’t matter how the Avi books are organized, just so they are all together. Take the longer, bulker series out of the alphabetizing above and put each such series on its own low rent shelf. Pull out the Potters, the Series of Unfortunate Events, the Pendrangons, and the like. People look for those and each series stand out since it’s on its own shelf. (If we need to later, because we need the space, smaller series like Narnia and Dark is Rising can be pulled and shelved two such series on a shelf…one on the right side, one on the left.) Later refinements I’d like to add: Use round stickers on the part of the book that looks out when it’s shelved. Most of the books would have no round stickers but easier ones would have a green sticker. It would make these books easy to spot for looking for a quick read or the ones who are not reading at grade level yet. Red round stickers would be placed on the ones that might be more difficult for the students. White square stickers would be on books that are part of a series. A short series name (dark, narnia, potter, etc) and the books place in the series would be written on the white sticker. Feedback? This seems like overkill but I really would like a user friendly library.
